Women of the Murray has been awarded Community Organisation of the Year at the Numurkah Australia Day Awards and it feels important to say this first. This recognition belongs to you.
When Women of the Murray began, it wasn’t with big plans or expectations. It started with a simple belief that women in rural communities deserve connection, support, and opportunities to grow right where they are. What has unfolded since then has been shaped entirely by the women who show up, speak up, volunteer, listen, and lift one another.
Susan Benedyka, Chair of Administrators, with Stacey Dick, Founder of Women of the Murray, at the Numurkah Australia Day Awards.
Certificate awarded
WOTM Chair, Kimberley Tempest and Founder Stacey Dick, Accepting the award.
After the awards, Dr Graeme Emonson PSM, Chair of the Panel of Administrators for Moira Shire Council, shared words that deeply moved us:
“Your efforts have made a significant and lasting impact. It is individuals and organisations like you that embody the true spirit of community service and inspire others to contribute towards a brighter future for all.”
During Stacey's words of thanks after the announcement she stated.
“We’re still new on the block, so this was completely unexpected.”
And it was. This recognition came as a surprise, but it also served as a reminder that the quiet work matters. The coffee catch ups, the conversations, the courage it takes to walk into a room not knowing anyone, the support offered without fanfare. This is what community looks like and this is what you are building.
To be recognised in Numurkah, where Women of the Murray was nurtured and encouraged from the very beginning, makes this award especially meaningful. Community contribution, and connection is exactly why Women of the Murray exists.
Thank you for being part of this movement. Thank you for backing something that is still growing, still learning, and still finding its feet. We are proud of what has been created together and even more excited for what is ahead.
This award is not the destination. It is a reminder that when women support women, entire communities benefit.
