Rural Women's Day Tocumwal

As an event, it almost went too perfectly. Tocumwal has this beautiful fresh-air feeling—the sound of birds in the gum trees, sunshine reflecting off the Murray River. It felt peaceful, full of promise.

Walking into The Bend and finally saying hello to Jackie and Christine in person was surreal. I gave Jackie a big hug. I felt incredibly grateful—not just for the opportunity to be part of the day, but for everything she’s already achieved. So many locations, so many women impacted. The ripple effect of her work is something I deeply admire.

We set out the plates, cookies, and gift bags, dropping one over each chair. One by one, we added the personalised names to their tags—ready for the moment each guest would walk through the door. Then the banners went up. It all started to feel real. Women of the Murray standing proudly next to the Rural Women’s Day sign.

Guests arrived from 11:45am, and soon the hum of laughter and bubbly being poured filled the space. So many introductions. So many warm smiles. The sunlight streamed in through the full-length glass windows—it was hard to believe it was winter outside. Pops of colour on the tables, beautiful frocks, and excitement throughout the room.

I was introduced to Ros Vodusek and Kathy Gabriel—and I have to admit, I was a little starstruck. I had done my research beforehand so I could introduce them properly, and I was honestly in awe of what they’ve accomplished. True rural trailblazers.

For the first time in a while, I felt nervous speaking in front of a crowd. I didn’t want to disappoint anyone. This was a big deal. A big moment. First impressions mattered. I welcomed everyone, introduced Jackie, and then the mains were served—an alternate drop of slow-cooked brisket or chicken breast. Both looked divine.

The Bend delivered some of the best food I’ve had at an event. I was especially impressed by the timing—70 meals, all served simultaneously and perfectly coordinated with the program. One of my worries had been that speeches might be interrupted by food service, but the team absolutely nailed it.

After lunch, Kathy Gabriel took the mic. I already knew her story was powerful, but hearing her speak in person was something else. I was frozen in my seat, completely captivated. A couple of tears rolled down my cheek, I couldn’t help it. If I were in her shoes, I don’t know if I could’ve made it through what she did. Her honesty, her warmth, and her ability to tell her story exactly the way it needed to be told—even dropping the occasional f-bomb—made her even more relatable. Raw and real. Some may have been surprised, but I think that’s exactly why it landed so powerfully.

The applause was loud and long. I presented Kathy with a beautiful houseplant in a glazed ceramic pot from Floral Love in Cobram—an amazing store with every thoughtful gift you can imagine. Then came dessert: a chocolate pistachio tart and a deconstructed sticky date pudding. Just as stunning to look at as they were to eat. Again—flawlessly timed.

Next up was Ros Vodusek—a kind and passionate businesswoman who has built an incredible empire with Rich Glen. It was beautiful hearing how she’s included her children as key players in the business, sharing the highs, the lows, and all the love it took to get there. Award-winning and community-focused, Ros is a real asset to our region. The Vodusek family loves where they live just as much as the rest of us. The Murray River… why would you want to live anywhere else?

Ros generously gifted each of us a bottle of their Firming Elixir, rich in vitamin C—I can’t wait to try it.

As the day came to a close, I shared more about Women of the Murray and the importance of connection for rural women. Jackie thanked me and gifted me a ticket to the Rural Women’s Day Weekend Celebration this October—and I’m beyond excited to attend.

Reflecting on the day, I feel so inspired. My cup is full. I made new friends, shared the experience with familiar faces, and witnessed the kind of magic that happens when rural women gather.

To everyone who helped, showed up, and supported, whether in big or small ways, your presence made the day what it was.

Here’s to more events, deeper connections, and celebrating the incredible women who make this outstanding slice of rural Australia so special.
