Stronger Together: Why We Teach Women’s Self-Defence

Over 50 women and girls across rural and regional Victoria have now joined us to learn self-defence. What began as a simple idea, to give women the skills to feel safer — has grown into something deeply powerful.

We started these programs because too many women live with fear.

Too many walk with keys between their fingers.

Too many shrink themselves to feel safe.

Our self-defence sessions, led by Stephen Ahern from Shotokan Karate Budokai Victoria, give that power back. They remind women and girls that they are capable, strong, and worthy of protection, not just from others, but from self-doubt and fear.

“There are really fantastic synergies in what Women of the Murray is focused on and karate. Self-defence and the associated confidence can be quite transformational. Self-defence is fully inclusive, it can be adaptive to all ages, sizes, abilities and disabilities. It’s for everyone.” Stephen Ahern, Shotokan Karate Budokai Victoria

Why It Matters

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2021–22):

  • Two in five women (39%) have experienced violence since the age of 15.

  • One in four (27%) has experienced violence, emotional abuse, or economic abuse by a partner.

And women outside major cities are 1.5 times more likely to have experienced partner violence than those in urban areas (AIHW, 2024).

These numbers aren’t just statistics, they’re our sisters, daughters, mothers, and friends. That’s why we keep showing up.

What Women Are Saying

“It was terrific and I got a lot out of it. I learnt how to defend myself even in the smallest and simplest ways. I’m now aware of how to protect myself if I was attacked.”— Bev Y “I found it beneficial and it gave me a lot more confidence to handle different situations — and it was so fun! Steve is a great teacher.” Marylin M "We all started off quite quiet and shy and by the last week we were much more comfortable and confident.  I appreciate that Steve was so patient with us learning and practising all the moves. Thanks Women of the Murray for organising this event, it has helped boost my confidence a lot." — Shelley A

More Than Moves

Each class teaches practical techniques but it’s also about mindset. It’s about walking taller. It’s about knowing you deserve to feel safe. It’s about rediscovering your own power.

We’re proud to keep bringing these programs to towns across the Murray region, together with Stephen Ahern and Shotokan Karate Budokai Victoria.. We also could not bring these lessons to the community with our supporting partner Fiducian Financial Services.

We are looking for interest in 90min single introductory sessions in a town near you with 3-6 week programs in 2026. Email or DM directly on our socials to find out more information.

If your community, school, or workplace would like to host a women’s self-defence session, contact us at hello@womenofthemurray.com.au

Because every woman deserves to feel safe — and to know her own strength.
